Day 94 – Luke 9:1-36

Read online.

Good morning!
Time for a catch up! Yesterday’s readings were full of miracles: first the calming of the storm, then the deliverance of the Gadarene demoniac, followed by the healing of the woman with the issue of blood, on the way to the raising of Jairus’ daughter.
Enough miracles in half a chapter to establish that nothing is too difficult for Jesus – weather, evil spirits, health, even death has to submit to His word.
What a steep learning curve for the disciples – to follow Jesus through so many miraculous situations and see His power at work again and again.
I wonder how they felt when Jesus turned around and sent them out? Inadequate? Excited? Nervous? Important? Probably all those things! Notice how Jesus’ instructions leave them little room for personal gain, or anything beyond reliance on God!
Herod Antipas is curious about this new teacher – perhaps a little threatened too, given that he had already killed John the Baptist and now here is one more powerful than John!
When the apostles returned from their ministry trip, their reward was a trip to Bethsaida where 5000 men met them for a day of teaching! It must have been amazing, even to men who had seen God do miracles through them, to hand out one lunch to feed 5000 men (additional women and children implied), picking up twelve baskets of leftovers afterward!

After this there must have been a day when Jesus and the disciples got away from the crowds, at least for a while, and Jesus asks His friends who they say He is. Peter gives his now famous response: You are the Messiah sent from God!” Jesus then describes His coming death for them in detail, warning them not to tell others who He is. Then He turns to the crowds (never far away) and challenges them to turn away from self-preservation to follow Him.
The final word, on a day with so many different opinions of who Jesus is, goes to God the Father. On the mountain where Jesus was transfigured, the voice from heaven says “This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him.”

And just think – Father God says something very similar to you and me today!

Have a great day!
