Bible Reading Day 284

Day 284: October 11 (Colossians 2)
Good morning!
Yesterday we saw how Paul had to counter false teaching, as well as religious legalism, in the church at Colossae. Today we read the heart of Paul’s arguments in correcting those errors.
After stating clearly that God reconciled everything to Himself through Christ’s blood on the cross (1:20), Paul applies that reconciliation to his readers, saying “I want them to be encouraged and knit together by strong ties of love. I want them to have complete confidence that they understand God’s mysterious plan, which is Christ himself.”
Then he spends the rest of this section addressing the misleading, but attractive practices that were leading the church astray. First he states “In him lie hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” – not in teaching or worldviews that do not rest fully on God’s plan to reconcile everything to Himself through Jesus.
Next Paul says “For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body. So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” (v9-10). In other words, we do not work to become more spiritual apart from growing in our union with Jesus.
Paul goes on to say that our conversion is the death of the old and resurrection into new life, shown by the step of baptism. And he restates that we were once dead in sin, but God has made us alive in Christ. All the old laws, authorities, and influences have no right to us now.
Not only do they not have a right to us, they also have no value in overcoming evil desires that linger in our lives. Addressing patterns of sin cannot be achieved by human striving. The way those remaining negatives are dealt with is by being united with other believers in love, and by growing in our relationship with Jesus.
What one step could you take today that would deepen your relationship with Jesus and strengthen your connection with other believers?
Have a great day!
Mark.
