Day 291: October 18 (1 Thessalonians 5)

Good morning!

We have reached the end of the first letter to Thessalonica; Paul concludes his correction of their understanding of the return of Jesus. Bottom line – it’s going to happen unexpectedly, so live ready (with no hidden secrets or uncertainties about salvation).

Remember, Paul’s purpose is to encourage those who are grieving the death of loved ones, rather than laying out a systematic theology of eschatology. His conclusion is “Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever.”

Then Paul goes on to give some practical instructions for every Christian: honor your leaders and show them respect, warn your lazy brothers and sisters, encourage the timid ones, care for the weak, and be patient with everyone.

Verses 15 through 22 are full of wise commands – which apply to your life at this moment?

And Paul concludes with a reminder that God is working in every one of us to make us holy; it is God’s work, and He is faithful.

So today, expect Him to work in you and through you.

Have a great day!

Mark.
